Three new signings in the summer shone when the Liverpool under 18s beat Leeds 5-0 in Melwood on Saturday. Marcelo Pitaluga remained clean on his debut.
With both under-23s and 16-year-olds on duty in Kirkby and with safety a priority in the COVID-19 pandemic, the Marc Bridge-Wilkinson U18s hosted Leeds at the old training ground of Clubs in Melwood.
Bridge-Wilkinson made five changes to the team that had lost 2-1 to Wolves before the international break, including a debut for Pitaluga and a first start for new signing Mateusz Musialowski with Conor Bradley and Tyler Morton, both with the U23.
Musialowski got off to the perfect start to his full debut when the Pole scored the young Reds with a smart finish in the fifteen minutes.
Layton Stewart added his successful record for the season mid-way through the first half, slipping home off James Norris’ flank before becoming the supplier as Melkamu Frauendorf – another summer signing – started his second half emphatic first half.
The shiny Isaac Mabaya replaced central defender Jarell Quansah during the break. Within five minutes of his move, he had scored another goal for Liverpool and ended the goal with a distraction from Dominic Corness.
Pitaluga stood out at every level between the sticks on his first appearance for Liverpool, although the Brazilian is likely to endure busier afternoons as his time at the academy progresses.
The U18s dominated consistently, and given the prospect of Bradley and Morton making a more permanent move to the U23s, it’s encouraging that the drafts can more than keep up.
Musialowski appears to be following Frauendorf to find his way around his new environment and after scoring an initial goal for the club, he can hope that more will follow in the coming weeks.
Another new face came up late on the results sheet when Oakley Cannonier rose from the U16s to make his first at U18 level and claim a comprehensive 5-0 win.
