Andrew Yang, the entrepreneur who won national support as a presidential candidate in the 2020 Democratic Elementary School, will run for Mayor of New York City, he officially announced on Wednesday evening.

The race is already in Candidates occupied, with a likely decisive June 2021 democratic primary.

But Yang is at odds. His presidential campaign focused almost exclusively on a proposal for a Universal Basic Income (UBI) where the federal government would provide citizens with a monthly income. Yang, once an unknown entrepreneur, had never run for political office before launching his campaign for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. However, he raised millions of dollars and garnered an immense following of supporters from across the political spectrum interested in his UBI plan and warnings that automation would drive Americans out of their jobs and his simple English approach to politics. « You can talk to people like people, » Yang said in an interview after he finished his campaign early last year.

Yang started his campaign on Wednesday evening, his 46th birthday, in a video of the entrepreneur portrayed as sane New Yorker everyone who found a home in town 25 years ago when he moved to Morningside Heights. « Seeing my city as it is now breaks my heart, » said Yang. In the two and a half minute ad with pictures of Yang wearing a « Forward New York » mask as he walks the streets, the candidate promises to create a guaranteed minimum income and expand access to high-speed Internet. “Take back control of our subway” and set up a Volksbank, “so that it is no longer so expensive to be poor. «

The ad shows Yang playing the piano on Coney Island, banging his elbow in a barbershop, waving to the plumbing workers, talking about the injustice of police violence against black people ( » It’s beyond injustice, it’s inhuman  » ) and the empty storefronts of investigating shuttered shops (“It’s crazy,” he says, sitting with Ron Kim, a member of the Queens Congregation, about the closing rate).

« We’ll intelligently reopen to ours reviving incredible culture, « Yang tells voters in the video. “Maybe we can even save the Knicks.”

His campaign said the video was made by Darren Aronofsky, the filmmaker best known for making films a little darker than a campaign ad, including Requiem for a Dream and most recently Mother.

The video also features an appearance by Rep. Ritchie Torres, a newly elected Democrat from the Bronx and a young star in city politics. Torres doesn’t specifically endorse Yang in the ad, but an advisor to the campaign suggested that confirmation might come.

Yang will appear for the first time as mayoral candidate at an event in Morningside Park on Thursday morning.

During his Presidential campaign pushed Yang UBI in a viral, internet-centric way – during the third presidential debate in Houston, Yang announced on stage that his campaign would give away $ 120,000 in campaign funds as part of an expansion of a pilot UBI program if supporters went to him would website and register for a chance to gain entry into the program. During his last rally in New Hampshire, Yang’s supporters urged him to run again for office. When Yang ended his campaign last February after failing to break through in the first two competitions, he told Buzzfeed News that popularizing UBI was his standout.

« That will be the most important legacy: If we Accelerating the end of poverty in this country – which I think we already have because I don’t think this idea will go away, « he said.

On Wednesday evening, his burgeoning mayoral campaign distributed a proposal for a UBI program, which aims to provide $ 2,000-5,000 a year to 500,000 low-income residents and enroll participants in what Yang calls the People’s Bank of New York City with the ultimate goal of « ending poverty in New York City altogether, » it said in a copy of the plan. His campaign said a Yang government would spend $ 1 billion annually on monetary relief and expand the program through public and philanthropic funding over time.

Yang is less a novice candidate than a target for mayor other attack candidates and as a national figure who has previously drawn his attention outside the city. The current mayor, Bill de Blasio, who also briefly ran for president in 2020, is limited to the end of 2021.

The idea of Yang as a candidate for mayor got around even before the end of his presidential campaign. In its primary endorsement, the New York Times editors praised Yang as « a committed and enthusiastic candidate whose diagnoses are often thought-provoking, » but without sufficient political experience. « We hope he decides to get involved in New York politics, » they wrote. Yang himself consistently refused to rule out the idea, and after his campaign ended, told BuzzFeed News that he was considering the possibility.

« One of the things I’m most curious about is who the others are There are candidates in the race and what the race would be like, « he said. “Because I tend to do something that I feel like I will have a huge impact and add a lot of value. So if someone is already running who has a positive agenda that is very much in tune with mine, it is not me who is just being driven by maximum political advantage. I want to see how much value I can add. “

There are already many other candidates and more are possible. These include New York Comptroller Scott Stringer, President of the City of Brooklyn, Eric Adams, former de Blasio attorney and MSNBC facility Maya Wiley, former Obama-era housing secretary Shaun Donovan, and former New York City Plumbing Director Kathryn Garcia. New York City has never had a woman mayor and only once has a mayor who was not a white man – David Dinkins in the early 1990s.

The pandemic is putting significant pressure on the race and the pressure on them who wins it. It devastated the economy of New York City. The unemployment rate is almost double the national rate, and there is great uncertainty about how the city’s businesses will survive after the pandemic ends, especially if more people can work from home, which in turn is draining Manhattan’s density of office buildings and the companies that serve them. This then raises significant questions about the city’s future tax revenues and the city programs and agencies that need that money to survive.

Yang grew up north of the city in Westchester County and lives in Manhattan, where he ran businesses, before he became president. In 2011, he founded the nonprofit Venture for America, which was designed to launch startups in cities across the country. Previously, he had run a tutoring company in town, then called Manhattan GMAT, which he sold to the massive testing company Kaplan. In 2011 he was charged with gender discrimination by a former GMAT employee in Manhattan.

How often he actually stays in Manhattan became a campaign issue even before Yang officially entered the race. Yang and his wife Evelyn, who featured prominently in his campaign launch video, spent much of the last year of the pandemic outside New York City at his New Paltz state weekend home. He defended his decision by pointing out the quarantine situations experienced by thousands if not millions of New Yorkers.

« Can you imagine having two children in a two-bedroom apartment in a virtual school and then to work yourself?  » Yang said in an interview with the New York Times in January, a quote that immediately drew contempt from candidates in the running.

The speech of Yang’s mayoral election escalated just before the holidays, when in Politico over its reach in town and his plans were reported, and on December 11th with the publication of an article in the New York Times entitled, “Is Andrew Yang Running for Mayor? ? All signs point to yes. “At the time, Yang allies said the proposal was premature and a decision had not yet been made. He was still battling for a role in Joe Biden’s new administration, said one.

Of his deliberations, one person familiar with the candidate’s thinking said the biggest was the immense reality of what would happen if he would actually win: the next mayor will be « piled up with a whole load of crap, » as the person put it. In 2019, Yang recognized his candidacy for president in an otherwise sometimes 22-month race with a total of 27 candidates by having fun on the campaign. This job wouldn’t always be fun.

At certain times over the past year, Yang announced to some of his former campaign advisors that he had ruled out a mayoral run. Some of them then worked for other candidates in the race. In the months leading up to his announcement, Yang relied on his 2020 campaign manager, Zach Graumann, as well as several employees from Humanity Forward, the political group he founded last March.

Yang also sought advice from Bradley Tusk, a friend and strategist who led the successful 2009 re-election bid for former Mayor Michael Bloomberg in New York City. Bloomberg and Yang had their own friendly relationship when they were both running for president and were in contact after Yang’s campaign ended.

“I still am. It’s still what we do, ”Yang said in an interview this spring about his political group. « It’s still about proving that we are the best at solving our problems. »
