The California Golden Bears will have their work cut out for them when they face the Colorado Buffaloes on Thursday afternoon. The Golden Bears ended a streak of three losses by beating the Washington Huskies 84-78 for the last time. Meanwhile, the Buffaloes scored another Pac-12 victory, beating Utah 65-58 the last time they hit the hardwood.
Colorado beat California six times in a row before it was the final meeting between the two schools (76-62) lost. The current odds favored the Buffalo by 15 points in this match.
The conference game didn’t go so well for the Cal Golden Bears, but they finally reached the victory column against Washington last time around. The Golden Bears have big problems on the offensive this season and, according to KenPom, rank 131 in offensive efficiency. Against Washington, the goal wasn’t a problem as three Cal players were double digits.
Cal started the game on fire by only setting up the third 40-point half of the season and then ending just as hot and 44 points in the second half scored. As a team, they shoot 45.2% off the ground in the season, but this season they stepped it up a bit and made a connection on 55% of their attempts. Three different Golden Bears had double-digit results from Andre Kelly’s 22-point performance.
Colorado may not be in the AP Top 25 but is currently ranked 18th on the KenPom ranking. According to KenPom, they have the nation’s 19th best team in terms of defensive efficiency, in addition to 25th place in offensive efficiency. They are an all-round team that is problematic for everyone.
After starting the new year with a loss at UCLA, they made a good recovery, beating a then No. 17 Oregon team 79-72. They then took to the streets and covered a decent Utah team as 2.5 point favorites.
The game in Utah wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies as the buffalo made up a double-digit deficit in the second half had to. After scoring 37 points in the second half, the Utes held it down and kept it down to just 21 in the second half. D’Shawn Schwartz had a monster game for Colorado that scored 15 points and scored 15 rebounds. There is no doubt who is the better team in this match. The Buffalo may be underrated in the polls, but the books don’t sleep on them at all and install them as 15-point favorites in this game. They play both sides of the ball as well as almost every team in the country, and their feature film shows it.
It’s always difficult to get 15 points in a basketball game, but it’s hard to imagine the Golden Bears more than Can achieve 60-65 points. The Buffaloes are the best defensive team the Golden Bears have seen all season. Most of what California scored against the Pac-12 opponents before the Washington 69 outbreak was against Oregon. The Buffalo appear to be similar to the UCLA team that kept the Golden Bears at just 56 points. This game could get out of hand prematurely, which is not good news for Cal supporters.
