The Victorian government will be spending $ 33.7 million on introducing new road safety cameras that can identify drivers with their cell phones behind the wheel, AAP’s Benita Kolovos reports.

Last year, the technology was tested over a period of three months, evaluating almost 680,000 vehicles.

One in 667 drivers was also caught not wearing a seat belt while others were Driving without hands on the wheel or with pets in the laps were seen.

Acting Secretary of State for Emergency Services, Danny Pearson, said Friday that it was « unacceptable that so many Victorians endanger the lives of others ».

Talking on the phone while driving is incredibly dangerous, and this attempt has shown how common it is on Victorian roads.

The process was conducted from July to October 2020 while the state was in its fourth phase and the authorities anticipate that the rate of violations will be higher as traffic returns to previous levels.

The distracted driving technology already in place across NSW uses cameras Artificial intelligence system to capture high resolution images of vehicles at any time of the day in all traffic and weather conditions.

Images believed to contain a cell phone crime are then reviewed by trained personnel.

Research by the Monash University Accident Research Center shows the technology can prevent 95 fatal accidents per year.

Further stakeholder consultation, tests and demonstrations, and a public awareness campaign will take place before the technology becomes enforceable in 2023 will.

It looks like these reports suggesting an animal escaped are indeed false. The closure of the zoo was a security measure following the sudden death of the chimpanzee Mowgli.

The TV stations have set up a helicopter over the zoo, but I’m not going to publish the photos as they feel invasive given the grief its caretakers are feeling.

The picture showed that teams were looking in the river that separates the chimpanzee enclosure from the public.
