World news – UCLA blows out Washington state to remain undefeated in Pac-12

Looking at his team’s success amid the fights of some of his top marksmen, UCLA coach Mick Cronin said he envisioned a game where all of his players got hot at the same time.

Tyger Campbell started with a floater. Cody Riley followed with two consecutive jump shots, a jump hook, and a twist pull for a layup.

The game was less than three minutes old and the Bruins had fired their first five shots. Soon, others would join in the fun of the shooting and help UCLA enjoy a rare breather as they raged against Washington State between 91 and 61 at the Pauley Pavilion, giving the Bruins a fifth straight win.

Making 54% of their shots was even more impressive for the Bruins (10-2, 6-0, Pac-12 conference) considering the ad was against a Cougars team that ran on Thursday against the best in the nation was 35.5%.

But Washington State (9-3, 2-3) couldn’t stop Campbell, who made seven out of eight shots en route to 16 points, or Riley, who made five out of nine shots while he was 12 points completed. Campbell also made his two three-pointers after entering the game and only shooting 24.1% from a distance.

UCLA, Oregon will meet twice in Los Angeles after the second shift

UCLA and Oregon are scheduled to play in Eugene next week, but due to COVID-19 issues with the ducks, teams will play twice at the Pauley Pavilion from the end of this month.

UCLA guard Johnny Juzang scored on seven – against-14 shooting a career high of 17 points, including three out of six from a distance. He continued his strong game after recording his previous career high of 16 points against Arizona last weekend.

Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 16 points for UCLA, which remained on the Pac-12 rankings and had their best start in conference play since winning their first seven games in the 1993/94 season.

In another encouraging development for the Bruins, sniper Jake Kyman made two out of three three-point points after shooting 23.8% into the game from a distance.

UCLA scored the most points in one half under Cronin while building a 54:38 lead at halftime with the Bruins shooting 65% while shredding the Cougars 2-3 zone, which was seven out of nine three-point points (78%) and all seven of them resulted in their free throws. The stat that best indicated the Bruins’ willingness to share the ball was their 20 field goals with 15 assists.

Senior Guard Isaac Bonton scored 23 points to lead Washington State, who have lost their last 10 games at the Pauley Pavilion.

Ben Bolch has been with the Los Angeles Times since 1999. This is his second time as a UCLA beatwriter, which seems appropriate as he has covered almost all sports except hockey and horse racing. Bolch is also the author of the recently published book « 100 Things UCLA Fans Should Know That & Do Before They Die ». He previously covered UCLA basketball from 2010 to 2011 before covering the NBA and the Clippers for five years. He happily exchanged hotel points and airline miles to cover UCLA basketball and soccer again in the summer of 2016. Bolch was once named Worst of the Week by NBA TV’s The Starters after interviewing their celebrity journalism. Style questions at an NBA All-Star game and consider it one of its best moments.
